See this site.: Here is excellent information for first time tampon use: http://www.Youngwomenshealth.Org/tampon.Html. It is not uncommon for tampon use to be uncomfortable the first time. Encourage you to use the smallest size of tampon initially. A smooth, rounded plastic applicator may be more comfortable that an applicator made from paper products. Proper insertion technique is important.

Use a mirror: The first time may be uncomfortable. Be sure to use a junior tampon and lubricate with vaseline . Use a mirror to see that you have inserted into vagina properly. Perhaps if you have mom or older sister to help?

Have your GYN check: Just to make sure there is no physical obstruction (such as from the hymen at the vaginal opening or a septum up higher in the vagina) you can have your gyn check in the office. They may even be able to place a tampon correctly in the upper part of the vagina for you and see if you are comfortable. Also keep in mind that tampons come in different sizes so you may need a shorter or thinner one.
