What type of doctor can order a bronchoscopy?

???: A lung specialist is called pulmonologist.

Pulm or Gen Surg: Pulmonologists do the bulk of bronchoscopy; however, most general surgeons have some training in bronchoscopy and should be able to perform one. Most sophisticated bronchoscopic procedures (ebus, transbronchial biopsy, etc) will be performed by a pulmonologist. Any physician can refer someone for an evaluation for bronchoscopy - but only the person doing it can "order" it.

Pulmonologist...: A bronchoscopy is performed by a lung doctor so a patient needs an evaluation by a lung doctor to see if this test is necessary and then the lung doctor will perform the test.

Various: Usually it's a pulmonologist (adult or pediatric), but also an ear, nose throat (ENT) doctor who can do them, as well as some surgeons. The physician who will do it is usually also the one ordering it.

Several: Bronchoscopy is not really "ordered". You will be referred for consultation by a specialist; thoracic surgeon, pulmonologist, or otolaryngologistst (ent). The specialist will discuss with you why they advise a bronchoscopy, what he/she is looking for, and what you can expect (risk/benefits) of the procedure (rigid or flexible bronch, ebus, em-nav bronch, laser/pdt, lavage, etc..).
