You are correct: The lower part of the nose, the fleshy part, is held open partly by muscles and partly by firm cartilage. Facial paralysis on one side will commonly cause collapse of the nose and the "nasal valve" because the muscles no longer hold it open. In this case, the facial plastic surgeon can do a very simple operation to open up the nose for breathing and appearance. See someone who specializes.
