Must-have info: Patients should always be asked their blood type when they go for an amniocentesis. It is best to have a copy of that to share. If rh negative, always remind the doctor and nurse before you leave.
Dr. Marilynn Frederiksen
Maternal-Fetal Medicine 47 years experience
Amniocentesis: Usually you'll see a counselor first. For a consultation, knowing your own medical history is important. Knowing whether there are birth defects in the family and the exact diagnoses helps. Remember your last menstrual period. A copy of your blood type is very helpful.

A member asked:

Do I have to bring someone along, or can I drive after the amniocentesis?

You can drive: There is no reason you can't drive yourself to and from your amniocentesis. It can be nice to have a friend or family member there to hold your hand, but its not necessary.
