Guidelines available: Diagnosis of asthma is made based on a detailed history of symptoms, timing, triggers, etc. Lung function tests with response to albuterol can be helpful. Exhaled Nitric Oxide is a newer test that is useful. A chest x-ray is usually normal but helpful in eliminating other diagnoses. If lung function tests are normal, then methacholine challenge test may be necessary.
