Hopefully, referral: Depression that meets diagnostic criteria is a condition for mental health specialists - social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc. Are trained in treating conditions that gps are not. There probably are some gps that can help with a prescription and even some common sense advice. But with few exceptions, you'd be better off seeing a mental health specialist for depression.

Your GP would: Likely ask you about depressive symptoms. He or she may take lab tests to search for an underlying medical cause for depression. Some gp's treat depression. - usually more garden variety. Some gp's refer to a psychiatrist ; /or psychologist for further assessment ; treatment.
