Very often they do: While medications are not always effective for everyone, medications currently on the market for anxiety and depression have been found to be effective by many people. It is important to note however that research suggests that the combination of medication and counseling are the most effective for treatment of anxiety and depression, and in fact are more effective than either alone.

Yes, but they are...: Yes, but they are not a cure all. Most studies recommend a combination of medication & psychotherapy. Since I am a psychologist, unless the depression is very severe & the person is suicidal or the anxiety is debilitating, i start with psychotherapy & refer for medication if it is needed later. The meds may take the edge off & allow the person to take better advantage of the psychotherapy.
