Loaded Question!: The terms you use beg questions. Recently many people use the term bipolar inexactly. No one means the same thing by normal. Meds can be avoided with a therapist who's confident treating people without them. People were helped before the new drugs existed. You'd need to find a confident therapist you'd trust to DX and plan strategies & see how it goes. If it's not working - you can rethink meds.

Depends on severity: There are different types of bipolar d/o, and bipolar i includes manic episodes that can be very disruptive to your life. One can become psychotic. Bipolar ii is mostly depression with some hypomanic episodes interspersed. If either is very severe, it limits your life. For bipolar d/o i wouldn't recommend doing without the medications, but patients ultimately choose what they're willing to do.
