Should an orthopedic surgeon who is also a sports med. specialist be able to know if knee pain is caused by something in the spine or the knee itself?

Yes: It is unusual for pure knee pain to be related to spinal issues. It is much more likely to be hip or knee causes.

Yes: One of the critical roles of a doctor is coming up with a " differential diagnosis" which is a list of the possible causes of your problem. We will sometimes do more specific tests , like an MRI to confirm but should always discuss with the patient.
