A member asked:

Hi all, my 14 months old girl is running a high fever, she is putting her finger in her mouth all the day, could this be related to molar teething?

Probably not: High fever is not related to teething - period. She may have a viral mouth/throat infection. In my part of the country we have been seeing a lot of hand/foot/mouth disease right now. Even at her young age, we occasionally see strep in the summer. But in this young girl, a "high fever" is worth a trip to the doc or urgent care - just don't blame her teeth.

No: Although mild fever can be associated with teething, there are no scientific studies to back this up. A high fever is most definitely not due to teething. This child should get a same day appointment to see their doctor.

No: High fever is not typical of teething. Your child may have a virus. Have her seen by a pediatrician for an evaluation.

Pain: A high fever is not teething. The fact that she is putting her hand in her mouth constantly could signify she has pain maybe not related to the teething. I would make sure you control the fever, make sure she is well hydrated and take her in to see her doc!
