Exam and stress xray: An ankle sprain means that the ligaments are torn partially to complete. Ligaments heal in a aprox. 6 weeks in a perfect world. Swelling from the injury can last longer and one may require physical therapy to get the muscles and motion up to speed. Persistent pain and instability is best evaluated by an exam, sometimes a stress xray to see if ligament is stretched out and ultimately an mri.
