Normal development.: Urinary continence is more than just the development of the external urethral sphincter, but requires significant development of the nerves, spinal urinary reflexes, and centers in the brain that can inhibit and promote volitional voiding. This is a complex system, and humans require 1-2 years for this system to mature enough for potty training.
