A member asked:

How do a aesthetic physician and a dermatologist differ?

3 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

These terms are used: To confuse and imply expertise when actual training is often lacking. Dermatologists are experts in skin diseases and conditions, and have very little actual surgical training. Yet many call themselves "cosmetic surgeons" after a few weekend courses, etc. Aesthetic physicians are usually family practitioners or mds of other non-surgical training who perform elective cosmetic surgery/procedures.

Confusing: Really, dermatologists and plastic surgeons and facial plastic surgeons are the main groups who have done formal training in the area of aesthetics. An "aesthetic physician" is usually someone who trained in a different field (maybe primary care, er medicine, or ob-gyn) who now wants to try to do some cosmetic work. Check certification of your doctor. Go to an expert, not a dabbler.
