Addiction vs. depend: Need to understand the difference between addiction and dependence. Many medications build in the patient's body and cause some mechanical and chemical changes so that the body actually requires the medication to function just at the point it did prior to initiation of the medication. Addiction is both physical and mental and may also involve this dependence depending on the medication.
