Possibly a year: Depending on the severity of the break, type of treatment, medical history (diabetes, vascular disease, smoker), and any complications from the broken ankle, it can usually take up to a year for swelling to completely go away. Generally the swelling starts to dissipate after the first week or so if treated properly. Hope this helps.
