Life expectancy: In the us, average life expectancy for a person with sickle cell disease in 1973 was 14yo, but today it reaches approximately 50yo, with some living into their 70s. In general, women with sickle cell anemia live longer than men. Aggressive supportive measures and increased awareness of Hydrea (hydroxyurea) as a therapeutic agent are driving these survival improvements. Surveillance is very important.
