Yes: Whether this is a true hiatal hernia or bochdalek or morgagni hernia, your surgeon should be able to fix this laparoscopically provided he or she has the proper experience. Depending on findings in surgery, the surgeon may elect to fix the defect primarily with suture, or may reinforce the defect with some type of prosthetic material, or a combination of both. Laparoscopy is the best approach.

Sounds like a: Paraesophageal diaphragmatic hernia. Whether it can be done with laparoscopy depends on a lot of things, such as local anatomy, surgeon experience, and luck. It needs to be repaired no matter what the approach, so my personal advice is to go ahead with it. If you are unsure, you can get a second opinion. Ask your doctor for a referral.
