Soothing.: Mothers have rocked and lullabied babies to sleep for eons. At some point baby will need to learn to self- soothe. I believe that we can help the baby to learn to soothe his or herself as we soothe them. (by, the way, this is personal opinion- I am not sure what pediatric literature says on this matter).

Prepare for problems: We find that babies rocked to sleep have a 400% higher rate of sleep disturbance for their first 3-4 years. If you are ready to be at the bedside and re-settle baby in the middle of the night from now on, please continue. If not, rock baby when it is fully awake and place awake in the crib when they tire. Learning to self settle into sleep is one of the building blocks of self sufficiency.
