In addition to: Laughing gas will not numb you up and therefore it cannot be used alone for extraction of teeth. You will be given local anesthesia to completely numb you up and i agree that for most patients the additional use of laughing gas will give you a "floating" feeling that will relax you, get your mind off the procedure, make time pass more quickly and make the procedure an easier one for you.

Need both: Local anesthetic (novocaine is no longer made) will work ok but adding laughing gas (nitrous oxide) would be better. Nitrous alone is not a great pain killer but is good for anxiety.

Different: The novacaine will get the tooth numb, and the gas will help you relax so you will be less stressed out by the procedure. You will not feel anything, see anything, or hear anything. This will reduce your stress, and less stress will help you heal faster. There are very few side effects. Many patients find this to be very helpful when having wisdom teeth extracted. Ask surgeon your questions.
