Depends: The choice of allergy medication depends on symptoms. There are several good over the counter antihistamines. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Yes: Almost all prescription medications have the potential to incite an allergic response in the body. Fortunately this is not common and so these medications have wide use and applicability. Allergy of this type produces skin rashes, ill feeling and breathing difficulties and rarely collapse.

A 16-year-old male asked:

Does allergy medication even work? I've took several kinds and i still have symptoms. Have been tested for allergies and I have them.

They work well.: In fact if they don't work it is reasonable to reconsider whether or not your symptoms are due to allergy. I think you will have to talk this over with your doc. You may simply need more medication or the addition of another agent.

Dr. Michael Zacharisen

Depends: Over the counter antihistamines like zyrtec, allegra, and Claritin are effective and safe. The antihistamine xyzal (levocetirizine) is very effective but by prescription. Nasal steroid sprays like qnasl, flonase, Nasonex are the most effective treatment for allergic rhinitis and only available by prescription. Prednisone is very effective but has significant side effects. Injections of steroid not recommended.
A 32-year-old member asked:

What to if I am looking into a prescription allergy medication any suggestions?

Dr. Powlin Manuel

Xyzal (levocetirizine): Good evening, for symptoms of allergy such as itchy throat, itchy eyes and runny nose, over the counter medications such as Claritin 10 milligrams are safe to take. Frequent use once per day may be needed until the end of pollen season. If you need a prescription allergy medication because the insurance will pay for it, xyzal (levocetirizine) will be a good option depending on your doctor's preference.
A 32-year-old member asked:

I'm worried because my boyfriend got high by taking a lot of his allergy medication, what are the risks, what do you suggest?

Not Safe: Overdosing on sedative antihistamines to get high is definitely concerning and should be addressed. Taking too many of these pills can alter your cognitive and motor function and can be similar to driving drunk if he gets behind the wheel of a car.
