Steroids: The most common cause of optic neuritis is demyelination, however there are several causes for demyelination. Its is important to determine the cause, lyme's disease, multiple sclerosis, a post infectious demyelination, sarcoidosis, etc. Treatment of the swelling associated with the demyelination is with IV steroids, but you also need to treat the cause , if there is a specific treatment

Steroids: We use often steroids in the acute setting. Alternatives include also ivig and plasmapheresis. A detailed work up is necessary in order to prevent optic neuritis. Multiple sclerosis is often associated with optic neuritis and a preventive treatment approach is available.
