They can: Family, friends, and loved ones of the alcoholic are affected also -- and have their own issues. Rather than being obsessed with drinking, they might be obsessed with their loved one's drinking. This can severely unbalance them even though they're not actively drinking! so there are groups for these family members, called alanon. It operates with a similar 12-step approach -- lifesaving.
