A member asked:

Since alcoholism is being a recognized disease am i right that the alcoholic does not choose alcoholism?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Complicated: There are genetic factors that contribute to alcoholism. When the person with these genes drink alcohol the genes get 'turned on'. This leads to the obsession and compulsion to drink in the alcoholic. People who do not have these genes will likely never experience that and can drink in a controlled manner any time they choose. We don't chose our genes but we chose our actions.
