A member asked:

Why do they have to leave the throat hole open for throat cancer surgery?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

There are: 2 "holes": into esophagus for swallowing, and into/thru larynx for breathing / speaking. Each could be bypassed with functional loss, obviously.
