Why am i being prescribed antidepressants for my ic?

Nerve Pain Controler: Many patients with ic respond to medications that can interrupt nerve signals from the bladder, resulting in some relief. Tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline) have been employed in such a fashion. Additionally, there seems to be a correlation between stress levels and ic flares; thus, you may be on a different medication to help reduce your perception of stress, which can also help.

Elavil or Atarax (hydroxyzine): Both can help to either help to relieve bladder pain or urinary frequency because they have some antihystaminic properties. Antidepressant effects can be a bonus.
