No: Not everyone needs it. Depends on a lot of factors. But it isd a simple test if done by a fertility specialist for instance when I do them it almost always takes less than 20 seconds to do and very rarely do any of my patients feel it. They can be painful if not done correctly by someone who knows what they are doing.

Still a good idea: An hsg is not necessary if the sole problem is ovulation. However, if there is a blockage in your tubes you may be going through treatment that will never work and never know it. The other reason to do it that insurers frequently will not cover fertility treatment unless the work up including an hsg is done first.

Yes: You are always free to decline any suggested medical therapy or test. Before you are asked to undergo a hsg your partners' semen should have been checked since it is much more pleasant for him to produce a sample than for you to undergo a hsg! possible alternatives could include a hysterosonogram in which the uterus is catheterized and saline injected during transvaginal sonography. Less detailed.
