Micrognathia: If the mandible, lower jaw, is recessed in relation to the maxilla or palate, usually it does not correct itself. These people usually do not have functional problems unless severe. Severe abnormalities usually occur in syndromes with other congenital abnormalities. These children require tracheostomy for difficulty breathing. Sometimes mandible is lengthened to better.

Receding jaw?: In a little baby less than 4 months old, the lower jaw isn't supposed to look too big. The pediatrician who has been seeing the baby at the 2-week, 1-month, 2-month, and upcoming 4-month check-ups can take a careful look to see how the baby's chin compares with the chins of other babies. Jaw shape and size is in large part inherited from parents, so the doctor will want to see both parents' jaws.
