Stretch cautiously!: When the achilles is inflamed or strained, i would stretch with caution. If you are using the elastic bands, that sounds like you are doing passive stretching. This is safer than active (weight bearing stretches). The thing to keep in mind with this injury is you want to stretch the achilles tendon without causing further injury.

Great question.: When using a tension type band for achilles tendinitis the rule of thumb is not to use so much that it is painful. You already have tendinitis, don't make it worse. When you do stretch do it very slowly and hold the stretch for 15-30 seconds. If any stretching causes pain then it is not the correct treatment for you at this time.
