Yes: You don't have to take them together, because their mechanism of action is very different. It's safe to take them together if that's the dose your doctor prescribed.

Yes.: Use some caution because Amitriptyline can potentiate the effects of narcotics. Be sure another person is with you to check on you to make sure you remain arousable especially if you are not usually taking narcotics. Start with one tablet and see what your tolerance is.
