Grindin's never good: If there is actual grinding of the foot and ankle, that sounds like extreme arthritis. This condition is treated via some options. This should definitely be looked at by a physician. This may be treated via a brace or orthotic. It may even require surgery. Ankle pain: Sorry to hear. "grinding" pain sounds like joint pain with motion. Sometimes the joints get inflamed at your age and antiinflammatory meds, ice, rest, and physical therapy help. Imaging may be needed to get a definitive diagnosis, and you may benefit from corticosteroid injection into those joints. Hope this helps.

Grinding: Although it is difficult to give you a precise answer given the information you supplied, i can tell you that over the years when a patient of mine has described their symptoms as "grinding" they usually have an arthritic process going on. An alternative would be a tendinitis of one of the long leg muscles attaching to the foot. Please have your primary care check it for you.
