Endodontist consult: See an endodontist for a consultation. It may require a retreatment or a surgical procedure called an apicoectomy or perhaps an extraction. If necessary, see two endodontists for second opinions.

Call your dentist: Your dentist needs to know what is going on. Your dentist may choose to prescribe an antibiotic, or your dentist may choose to change antibiotics if you are already taking one. It is possible that a specialist may need to evaluate this... An endodontist. Good luck with a solution.

Fracture: If antibiotics have already been prescribed, it is possible that your tooth is fractured. You should be evaluated by the endodontist or your dentist.

Abscess: There are mainly 3 possibilities 1) root canal failure / re-infection of a previously root canalled tooth. And 2) fracure or crack in the tooth &/or root , and 3) missed canal during root canal. Your endodontist , and using a microscope , can detect which one of there is the causative factor. Good luck.

Endo second opinion: In many cases, seeking a second opinion is not only warranted, but necessary. Unless your disease is life threatening and requires emergency care, it is never a bad idea to seek a second opinion. Getting a second opinion helps you feel more confident about your diagnosis and treatment plan. See a board certified endodontist for your treatment options.

Seek specialist care: How long after the root canal was an abscess discovered? Perhaps, the tooth was not restored and the tooth fractured, causing an abscess or the tooth got re-infected due to a temporary restoration washing out. There are many variables. A consult with an endodontist or oral surgeon may be in order. There may may secondary canals that were missed or the entire root canal needs to be retreated.
