When : When a patient initially has an injury, the area usually appears red, or erythematous. If a superficial blood vessel breaks under the skin, the area can appear more red. The area then usually appears blue, then blackish, then brown, the green, and finally yellow. This sequence can take up to a week. Some patients are more prone to bruising then others. Patients on blood thinners can develop more significant bruising.
