A 31-year-old member asked:
how well is a normal ultrasound at detecting pancreas abnormalities?

Dr. Eric Chen answered
Radiology 11 years experience
Not great: Pancreatic detail is limited on abdominal ultrasound. The pancreas is often obscured by overlying bowel or other structures because of its location deep in the abdomen.

How effective is ultrasound at detecting pancreas?

See answer: Ultrasound (us) certainly can identify the pancreas, particularly its head and body – the tail may often be obscured by bowel gas. Us is a good screening examination but ct or MRI are modalities that provide better delineation if your dr. Feels that they medically appropriate.

A 19-year-old male asked:
Is it normal for a pancreas to have a slightly increased echogenicity on the ultrasound scan?

Dr. Philip Kern answered

Meaning?: It is really hard to know what this means. Why was this test done? Is there a history of pancreatitis? By itself, this kind of descriptor on an ultrasound means nothing unless it is correlated with clincial findings.

Looks like Normal: I do not see anything worry some in your report. Unless there is a mass/growth present , it is nothing to be concerned about... such as a Cancer

Fatty Infiltration: It usually means there is quite a bit if fat that is seen on imaging in your organ. If you are obese, you should try to loose weight. Aldo discuss with your doctor.
