Migraine: Sounds like it might be a migraine, especially if he is nauseous as well with some photophobia. If does not go away with lying down and/ or nsaids call your doctor for advice.

Terrible HA: The description you make is most likely that of a migraine. But, if your son has never had a ha like this before and it is not relieved within a few hours with non-rx pain meds; see your doc asap. Other concerns- any change in vision, sleepiness, history of trauma-like playing baseball, vomiting, fever, neck stiffness. These are just a few other potential complications--some v.Serious.

Migraine: Sounds like your son is suffering from migraine headache.Usually Motrin 800 mg every 8 hours may help mild attacks. At times they are so severe, pain cannot be aborted. He will need to see his doctor and referred to neurologist for further management.

Recent Onset!: If this is a brand new symptom i would consider this an emergency and see a doctor asap. From your description, it sounds like a cluster headache but without some history, i would consdier this a first/worst headache and thus a medical emergency requiring immediate evaluation.
