Shift responsibiliy: The 12 yo is old enough to begin sharing responsibility for decisions and outcomes.Other meds may be more palatable and a self directed program of scheduled daily (or multiple x daily)emptying could decrease their need. Rewarding creative self management might help him become more self reliant and responsible. Pick your battles wisely and try to be the creative person in the process.

Why not?: At his age, not taking medication is not an option. That said, he may have a valid reason for not wanting to take the medication. Does it taste bad? Maybe you can switch to something tasteless like miralax (polyethylene glycol). Is it inconvenient? Is it causing him side effects? Talk with your son to find out how you can make taking medication a routine part of his day. A reward for taking it consistently may help.
