Slowly: The safest way is slowly. Gradual increase in resistance and repetions in sets will allow the muscle to adapt and strengthen, reducing soreness and chance of injury to the muscle and other parts. Consider working with a trainer or physical therapist with experience with children and adolescents, especially if the person has prior injury, conditions affecting the body part you are concerned about.
