Many problems: If diabetes is not treated whether type 1 or 2 it will eventually lead to organ damage in the eyes, kidneys, nerve damage in the feet and increased risk of heart diease. Luckily dm is a very treatable disease with the appropriate medications although which medication works best depends on the individual.

Confusing question: Type 1 dm was universally fatal, usually within months, prior to the discovery and use of insulin. Type 2 can be unrecognized in life and along with poorly treated type 1 will eventually lead to visual impairment, nerve and kidney damage along with many secondary issues.
