Yes absolutely safe-: The curative thing to do is remove the source of the infection. Sedation will keep you comfortable for the process. Antibiotics will only temporarily subdue the infection (and in some instances they can be ineffective and the infection can progress and become much more serious and even life threatening).

Have to: Can't eliminate the infection without removing the cause of the infection, in this case a wisdom tooth. Antibiotics may help limit the spread of the infection but will not provide a "cure". Please see your dentist or an oral surgeon before this becomes worse.

Normally: Should get tooth out asap if infected, but some oral surgeons may want to wait if infection is severe. May also depend on if you are going to be put to sleep for the extraction or local anesthesia with novocaine. You do not want to have an injection in the area of infection (normally an upper wisdom tooth.).
