Get evaluated: You need to get evaluated by a doctor and just be honest. Let them know that you think you may have depression. They will do the rest. They will likely run some lab tests to rule out any medical causes of depression, such as a low thyroid. If it is depression, they can then make the appropriate recommendations for treatment.

Fight back hard: Drs. Fowler and Howell have given you good advice. Get a full physical exam and lab work, take stock of any medications you may be taking, and review your life situation. Get with your physician, who is likely to recommend both medication and cognitive-behavioral therapy. A key is that what you DO -- even getting out of bed or forcing yourself to exercise -- feeds positively back on your mind.
