Long list: Anything that interferes with the focusing ability of the eye can be considered an optical defect. This would include the most common issues, refractive errors correctable by eyeglasses or contacts. Damage to the cornea or lens will disturb light transmission and create diminution of vision. There are inherited and developmental defects of the cornea and lens which also disturb vision.
