One cause may be: Carpal tunnel even though usually more fingers are numb with that but often it is a sense of relative numbness one notes and the middle may be just more numb than the others. Local irritation to the tendon sheath from a trigger finger can make the finger swell and seem numb, neuropathy if it affect the hands may be noticed first in the longer middle finger. Local trauma or bruising can too.
