PROPOFOL & SUX: I would think that the Propofol would be the more dangerous of the two. Succinylcholine (sux) can also cause anaphylaxis, but it's somewhat more prevalent with the propofol. For any future prospective operations, do check with the anesthesiologist.

Hard to say: Probably best to avoid both, if was true allergy. Propofol is in a soybean oil and egg Albumin base so is more likely to be the culprit. Unfortunately, it could also be a preservative. There are also other reactions that can cause shock from using sux, so i wonder if it was true anaphylaxis. Antibiotics or other muscle relaxants usually more suspect. If can, get all records before next surgery.

Difficult to answer: This is a tough question without having more background information; does your daughter have any other medical problems? What was the surgery? What exactly did happen? To be safe, i would explain everything you understand occurred to the next anesthesiologist that will be caring for your daughter. They will know how to proceed most safely. Good luck.

Be sure of diagnosis: Propofol and succinylcholine are very useful drugs, but both carry risks of histamine release and other potentially dangerous side effects. Speak with the anesthesiologist to get details of exactly what happened and what kind of reaction she had. If it really was anaphylaxis, she should see an allergist for further evaluation and an exact diagnosis of which medication caused the problem.

Propofol Likely: Propofol is the active ingredient in an emulsion of soybean oil, glyceryl, egg lecithin and water. There are other anesthetic drugs that can be used beside Propofol and succinylcholine, therefore, giving information to your doctor about the anaphylactic shock caused by the drug combination is extremely important to avoid future problems.

Several thoughts: Most likely a reaction to sux. Is she allergic to eggs? Propofol is "egg based" so that could be a cause.
