Recently had an egd done. only thing noted was erosive gastritis. could a hiatial hernia large enough to cause symptoms be missed?

Not likely: A gastroenterologist would easily be ale to recognize a hiatal hernia, even of a small size. Ask your gastroentrerologist for a discussion of your results in detail.

Hiatal hernia: Usually large hiatal hernias are easy to see on egd. However, it is operator dependent so it is possible it was missed. Keep in mind, erosive gastritis and hiatal hernia / gerd are two separate things. You can have horrible gastritis and have no hiatal hernia.
