Some: Orthopedist s are surgeons and physical medicine physicians (physiatrist) are not. Both are trained to deal with muscle and bone issues but few physiatrists do fracture care.

Yes and No: Typically orthopedics is a specialty of surgery and physical medicine and rehabilitation is a specialty of medicine. However the two do overlap quite a bit. Typical physical medicine & rehabilitation doctors are experts in orthopedic, neurological, rehabilitation evaluation and treatments that are non-surgical in origin. If surgery is warranted than a referral to orthopedics will be made.

Yes: Orthopedics and physical medicine involve treatment of some of the same patients, ie. injuries to the musculoskeletal system, though surgery is reserved for the orthopedics. Physical medicine training replaces the surgical technique training with more detailed rehabilitation techniques, with inclusion of rehabilitation from neurological, rheunatologic, and other medical conditions.
