Yes: Actually an ortho can DX a meniscal tear a little better than an mr . Arthritis can b cn on plain x-ray.

Yes: Physical examination is essential in determining a patient's source of knee pain. In the setting of arthritis, a meniscal tear is almost always a secondary change related to arthritis and is most likely not the source of the pain. This is very important when discussing treatment options with your surgeon. The exam should be coupled with imaging (x-rays, MRI or ct) to arrive at a diagnosis.

Xrays/ MRI: Physcial exam helps with both. Xrays needed to diagnose arthritis. Mri for meniscal tear.
