Try effexor (venlafaxine): Some people have had moderate benefit with an ssri drug called effexor (venlafaxine). The over the counter herbs and such probably will not help, although some people have success with black cohosh. She should not take any estrogen containing product if she has had blood clots in her veins. If it is simply heavy bleeding with clots she would be a candidate for and benefit greatly from estrogen supplementation/.

Estrogen: Estrogen in its various forms are the best treatment for hot flushes. Your mother should see her gyn and discuss the various treatments available. History of blood clots is a contra indication, but there are various reasons why clots can form. Spontaneous, post surgery, etc. Have your mom discuss her history to make sure if her history of clots is relevant. Estrogen patches are another option.
