Depends: Menigococcal meningitis is an extremely contagious form of bacterial meningitis. There are reports of exposure to and death withing a 24 hour period. Other form of bacterial meningitis are not as virulent. Types of viral meningitis also present. If Meningococcal meningitis is present, those in contact must receive prophylactic treatment. Depends: Depends on which bacteria is causing the meningitis. Typically exposure is most concerning for those who have been in close contact with the patient. If there is a need for any prophylaxis that will be handled by your physician or the local health department.
