Acute cough: Cough that has been present for less than 4-6 weeks is called acute cough. There can be many reasons including infection. If a cough is worsening, associated with fever or productive of pus or blood, then an evaluation is warranted to determine the cause and receive specific treatment. Many cough suppressants are only partially effective.
