Several options: General anesthesia or regional with sedation. During general anesthesia you are completely out and in most cases your breathing is controlled. With regional (spinal or epidural) you can not feel your lower extremities and you are also sedated, breathing on your own. Depending on depth of sedation you might have minimal recollection. You should not have pain in both scenarious.

A general : Anesthetic will keep you fully unconscious. With a regional anesthetic, you can be sedated, even deeply, but not necessarily fully unconscious. Both will provide good pain relief during surgery.

Combination: Most surgeons prefer an anesthetic that numbs the patient from the waist down (regional anesthesia). This is usually combined with a sedative agent so you will sleep through the operations.

Both: The goal is to make you not feel the pain. Sedation or general anesthesia will make you sleepy.
