It is a symptom of : Emotional problems. It is an unhealthy way of coping with things like feeling empty, anger, self- punishment ect. If you or someone you know used self -harm please encourage them to looking into dialectical behavior therapy. Help is available.

Kind of...: For a long time it was treated as a symptom of other disorders. Recently it was reviewed to be included in the diagnostic manual mental health professionals use, as a disorder of its own. The industry needs to do more research so it wasn't added yet. However, there is research that shows effective ways to treat self-harm
